A hypnic jerk, a sudden and strong involuntary muscle twitch, often causes the sensation of falling right as you're drifting off to sleep. This happens during the transition from being awake to sleeping, when your muscles start to relax. Your brain misinterprets this relaxation as a sign that you're falling, and it sends a jolt to your muscles to "catch" you. It's a harmless, fascinating, and common phenomenon that's more a physiological reflex than a premonition.
